Mobile Yard Terminology
Hurdle
Description: Aluminium hurdle. Constructed with horizontal and vertical rails. Has curved corners. (Image:Banner1)
Available Lengths: 1.5m (5’), 1.8m (6’) or 2.1m (7’)
Available Heights: 0.9m (36”) or 1.0m (39”)
Function: Hurdles provide the pen. Connected together by Long Pins. Curved edges allow easier movement over rough ground. Vertical bars should always be positioned at the top of the hurdle. This reduces the risk of broken legs.
Panel
Description: Aluminium frame with plastic coated, solid black panel.
Available Lengths: 2.5m (8’)
Available Heights: 0.9m (36”) or 1.0m (39”)
Function: Plastic coated panels allow easy cleaning, reduces glare and higher bio security. Used to make or extend the main sheep race. Linked together by Long Pins. 4 panels are 33” wide and 16’ long so are ideal for drenching and crutching.
Long Pin
Description: Aluminium rod with crimped top.
Available Lengths: 0.66m (26”)
Function: Used to join Lugs and Couplings as well as Hurdle Support Post.
Lugs
Description: The small aluminium ovals on the end of a hurdle or panel.
Fixed Coupling
Description: The tubes, on the end of a hurdle or panel.
Function: To join Hurdles match Lugs with the Fixed Coupling and secure with a Long Pin. Couplings fit inside the Lugs.
Two Way Connector
Description: Aluminium tube with round Lugs attached.
Function: Used if you need to join two hurdles at the Lug ends. This can often occurs when forming a pen.
Hurdle Support Post
Description: Aluminium L shaped bracket.
Function: Used to provide stability to any pen, counter pushing from flock.
Short Pin
Description: Aluminium rod with crimped top.
Available Lengths: 0.33m (13”)
Function: Used to secure the Hurdle Support Post to the ground.
Race
Description: A long narrow pen
Available Widths: 0.5m (18”) or 0.8m (33”)
Function: Is the main working area when handling sheep. Can be one sheep wide (0.5m,18”) for drafting and working over the race or 2/3 sheep wide (0.8m 33”) when working in the race when drenching or injecting. It is either the fixed race in the base of the trailer or made from panels and spreaders.
Spreader
Description: U shaped aluminium frame.
Available Widths: 0.5m (18”) or 0.8m (33”)
Function: This is used to create the width of the race. Use a Long Pin to fix to a Hurdle or Panel.
Drop In Gate
Description: Aluminium Gate.
Available Widths: 0.5m (18”)
Function: Slide in and out of yard base or 18” spreader. Hold sheep in narrow race.
Forcing Gate
Description: Aluminium self closing gate with lock shut pin.
Available Length: 1.8m (6')
Function: A large gate used to 'force' sheep into a pen or race.
Anti Backing Gate
Description: A sprung loaded gate that only allows entry from one direction.
Available Width: 0.5m (18")
Function: Used at the start of a race to stop the sheep backing out once in.
Guillotine Gate
Description: Aluminium gate that operates like a guillotine sliding up and down. Can be operated from a distance..
Available Width: 0.5m (18")
Function: Allows sheep to be let free whilst the shepherd stands at the back of the race.
5 Hole Plate
Description: The sides of the Guillotine Gate Anti Backing Gate and 18” Spreader have a 5 hole plate.
Function: Used to attach hurdles or panels to a Guillotine Gate, Anti Backing Gate or Spreader using Long Pins. Also used to fit to yard base.
Panel with side gate
Description: Aluminium frame with plastic coated, solid black panel with side gate built in.
Available Lengths: 2.5m (8’)
Function: Use for shedding and letting out. Right or left handed.
Spreader and Gate
Description: Aluminium self-closing gate with lock shut pin.
Available Width: 0.8m (33")
Function: Positioned at the end of a race to let sheep in our out.
Three Way Connector
Description: Aluminium tube with flat hole plate attached.
Function: Used for joining three hurdles together or splitting a pen into sections.
